Who doesn’t love breakfast?

Hi all! Spring is in the air and I’m here for it. I think I’m going to take my first train ride of the year this Friday. I’ll go for the classic 3pm ride in the open-air car. I CAN’T WAIT. Now, time for another theme from PfY, and it’s one of my favorite things in the world—breakfast.
In PfY, Nicole is an avid fan of the first meal of the day. She’s partial to poached eggs, eggs over easy, and scrambled eggs if they’re cooked soft. Homefries are her jam and creamed chipped beef is heavenly. She’ll eat an omelet but never orders them out because even a hint of brown on those eggs is a hard pass. Let’s face it—who has gotten an omelet at a diner that didn’t have brown? Exactly.
There’s a great line from Nicole and Everett’s first date that I’d like to share. As I mentioned in the previous Christmas shop post, Nicole and Everett spend some time there on their first date. While inside, they have a chat about their thoughts on breakfast, and Nicole says, “I think that if someone looked into my soul, they would see home fries and creamed chipped beef.”
Now that is some dedication to breakfast! I get it too. It’s my favorite meal as well. I write about it in all of my books, making sure my characters have an appreciation for it. It’s the way to my heart. The pictures up there? Those are some of my favorite breakfasts. Some I made and others were made for me.
In PfY, breakfast becomes a major plot point because of course it did. Some of the most tender moments for Nicole and Everett happen while they are sharing breakfast or talking about it. In some respects, like in the quote from Nicole, breakfast, in its basic goodness, represents who Nicole is as a person. She’s warm, happy, and wholesome. Although, she does like a shot of hot sauce on her eggs every now and then. Take that as you will. 😉
They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It breaks the fast. It replenishes you and gives you energy. If you make time for it daily, it helps maintain balance for a healthy lifestyle. It’s essential, nourishing, and improves your well-being.
That’s what Nicole is for Everett—a disrupter of his unresolved trauma and avoidant behavior. She shows him what a life of love could look like if he breaks down the emotional walls he’s built around his heart. He hides behind his work and responsibilities, using them as an excuse to not deal with his past trauma. This is very common and especially for men who are taught to stuff down emotions. Anyway, all this leads to the big questions in the book—has Nicole’s devotion and love gotten through to him? Did he read her book? Will he break his emotional fast and come back to her?
I can’t wait for you all to find out. 🥰
Until next time, be well.
