The Ice Cream Prophecy

Happy October! I promised ice cream and I’m going to deliver. But first, some author/book news. There are some events in the works. I’ll be posting more about them in the upcoming months but know that bookish things are happening behind the scenes.

Now, drum roll please…

Cool, creamy, and sweet—the perfect treat to end a warm day. Thousands of flavor combinations. The classics—vanilla, chocolate, strawberry. Sundaes. Cones. Hot fudge. Whipped Cream. Yes, my friends, I’m talking about ice cream.

I love ice cream. I know, I know. Who doesn’t? But seriously, I’m a fan. I eat it regularly and not just in the summer. Some of my favorite flavors are coffee, chocolate peanut butter, and dark chocolate with raspberry. You can see in the pictures up there that I’m a big fan of Premise Maid in Breinigsville, PA and I love checking out creameries in Delaware when I visit my brother. I also adored a cute Hallmark movie about ice cream. I mean two of my favorite things—ice cream and romance? Yes, please.

If you’ve read any of my books, you know that I write about food quite a bit. Ice cream became a fun theme in Pining For You. In fact, there are two important scenes with ice cream that I want to talk about. Why? Because it’s October and there’s something mystical about them.

The first ice cream scene happens when Nicole brings Everett two pints from her favorite place for one of their dates. In that particular scene, they watch each other quietly as they enjoy the ice cream. That’s the thing about these two…there is a lot of unspoken understanding between them. It’s almost like they’re communicating on a soul level. They’re weirdos too. They have a silliness about them. It’s like all the things that most people would find annoying are the very things they love about each other. It kind of reminds me of Michael and Holly from The Office. It’s that kind of vibe. Anyway, ice cream is the catalyst or the portal to their deeper connection in that scene.

The second scene takes place toward the end of the novel. Everett, knowing how much Nicole enjoys ice cream, stocks her favorite flavors in the freezer for her. It’s a very sweet gesture and shows how much he cares for her. She’s very touched. I’m sure many of you can relate to acts of kindness like this. Anytime someone sends you a thoughtful gift or a kind note, it makes you feel seen and appreciated. Just a simple gesture to let someone know that you care can make a huge difference in their life. I listen to my soul and do what’s in my heart. I find that I live my best life when I do so.

Now, let’s get into the woo-woo stuff…

The first scene? 100% wrote from real experience. I know, not really supernatural. Authors write from their experiences most of the time. But spiritual? Oh, hell yeah. All that soul talkin’? That was real.

As for the second scene, it was completely fictional. At that point in the writing, I was in a zone where I can only describe the process as having one foot in the real world and one foot in another. Artists and athletes talk about a zone or space where visualization, manifestation, and creativity come from somewhere deep within. It’s difficult to explain. I guess one way to describe it is that my soul took over the writing. I’m still using my brain, obviously, but the words flow from deep within. It was an intensely satisfying scene to write.

Then, a month after writing the scene, it happened in real life. Even now, when I think about it, it blows my mind. But, as I’ve mentioned previously, there have been many things I wrote about that have happened in my life. I’ve surrendered to it at this point. I can’t explain it rationally, and I’ve stopped trying to. What I do instead is listen to what the signs and synchronicities tell me. Not in a—look for signs kind of way. No. But when they do appear, and they do so often, I listen.

So, in the end, I guess the message I’m trying to convey is that ice cream really is divine.

Until next time…
