National Novel Writing Month is just around the corner and if you’re a writer and haven’t been thinking about trying it, you should. I have participated for two years now- 2012 Razers, Book 2 in the Fireflies Trilogy and 2013 Raven’s Sphere, a new adult sci-fi space odyssey. The first time around I didn’t make the 50,000 words, but I did start a week late. The second time, I more than completed the task, but it was challenging month. I was teaching overtime and chasing after my two spunky daughters (4, 8), while grabbing writing time whenever I could.  Was it overwhelming at times? Of course. Did I eventually rub off the letter ‘E’ on my keyboard? Yes. Did I burn dinners because I couldn’t stop a scene? You know I did. But was it worth it in the end? Absolutely. Knowing that I wrote a novel, or at least the major scenes/story arc of a novel in one month was priceless.  It also made me hungry for the next year. And as it just happens, it’s almost here.

This year will be my toughest NaNo yet. I’m teaching seven (yes, I said seven), college courses, I have homework every evening (3rd grade is tough!), I’m pushing five miles on the elliptical five days a week, and I’ve decided to end the Fireflies trilogy by writing the final installment- Mystics. I’ve always known how the story would end, but I never realized how it would affect me emotionally. If you’re a writer, you know what I’m talking about—writing the last book or last chapter of a story means saying goodbye to the characters. I know I’ll miss them. So my plan is to appreciate each thought, action, and line of dialogue I write for them. This is the last, and there’s no turning back. Okay, enough sappy stuff.

Halloween is almost here and after that it’s time for the mad dash of fingers, clicking keys, head scratching, backspacing………………., word counting chaotic ride that is National Novel Writing Month. Strengthen those digits, 50,000 words is quite the workout.
