Spring is in the air! Well, it was. The weather in PA has been crazy. Two days ago, it was ninety-seven degrees. Yesterday and today, it dipped back into the fifties. As I write this, I can’t help but think of that meme with the dog at work, sitting in front of a computer, with flames all around him, thinking, “Everything’s fine.”
Okay, back to Pining For You…
I’m going to shift back to a location for this post—the Lehigh River. I snapped a couple of the pictures above from a bridge next to the train tracks just this past Tuesday and felt inspired. When I was on the train ride that moved me to write the book, I had an overwhelming sense of home as I looked out at the Lehigh River, and the mountains beyond. Not long ago, my good friend and editor made a comment that the real love story in Pining For You is between Nicole and the town of Jim Thorpe. I laughed. It’s somewhat true. In fact, I was just thinking on Tuesday, while on my walk, that I’m so thankful to the man who introduced me to the town. It’s a special place that warms my heart.
Now…the river.
The Lehigh River winds through the heart of Jim Thorpe, shaping both the town’s history and its natural beauty. Once a vital transportation route during the coal and railroad era, the river helped fuel the region’s industrial growth and remains closely tied to the town’s heritage. Today, the Lehigh River is known for its whitewater rafting, fishing, kayaking, and attracts outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year. Flowing beneath historic bridges and beside the Victorian architecture of Jim Thorpe, the river adds a peaceful backdrop to the picturesque town.
In Pining For You, there’s a scene where Nicole is on the train, soaking in the beauty of the river against the backdrop of the Pocono Mountains. I wrote the scene from my personal experience. In fact, the background picture of the Lehigh River, on my Facebook author page, was taken during that fateful train ride. The idea for the book and the actual title came to me like whispers from the trees as they passed by. It was magical.
I intend to try out some whitewater rafting at some point and look forward to exploring more trails around town. I wish I had a guide. Hmm…that would make an excellent business, wouldn’t it? Hiking adventures with knowledgeable trail guides that could point out interesting flora, landmarks, and history.
Do you see how easily my mind wanders with big lightworker ideas? Next, I’ll be suggesting a ropes course adventure like one of the incredible date scenes from Pining For You. Hey, that’s not a bad idea either. One of my best friends likes to do ropes courses for her leadership camps. Think of all the people who could feel empowered as they traverse bridges, high up in the trees!
Okay, okay. The point is, there are wonderful outdoor activities that you can ALREADY do around Jim Thorpe and on the Lehigh River. Summer is almost here, so plan a trip. You won’t regret it. And if you see me, say hello!
Until next time, be well.
