In this podcast episode, Lisa reviews a sci-fi satire from indie author, Scott A. Combs.
Listen in...Episode 06 - Indie Review: The Kili Wanna Affair: A Galactic Guild Comedy by Scott A. Combs
This episode is dedicated to the indie review of The Kili Wanna Affair: A Galactic Guild Comedy: George & Sali Adventures, Book 1 by Scott A. Combs and an indie publishing Tip of the Week - If you are writing a series or have more than one book, offer the first chapter of the second book at the end of your first/other book!
First, Lisa and I chatted about our week. Correction! I talked about my week and then spaced out and forgot to ask Lisa about her week! Gah! I feel terrible! My apologies to my Indie Chick partner, Lisa. We reminded the listeners about the format for the podcast--we alternate between an indie book review and general self-publishing talk.
Next, Lisa reviewed The Kili Wanna Affair: A Galactic Guild Comedy by Scott A. Combs. The genre is science fiction satire told in the third person.
Here's the description of The Kili Wanna Affair: A Galactic Guild Comedy: George & Sali Adventures, Book 1 from Amazon:
Sali Terri & George Shooters—two rookie officers from the Galactic Guild—find themselves in way over their heads with political intrigue, working to ratify a treaty with the cantankerous locals of a small planet called Kili Wanna. Every time an agreement is about to be reached with the current emperor, someone kills him off, nullifying the planet's induction into the Galactic Guild. The madness ramps up when outside influences take the matter into their own hands and flood the Podunk planet with junk food in an attempt to corrupt their simple lifestyle and force them into an alliance.
Humor flows from the pages of this satirical tale. The Kili Wanna Affair delivers on laughs and adventure that defies its genre.
And...here's Lisa's review on Amazon:
The Kili Wanna Affair is hilarious! It's so campy and ridiculous...I loved every minute of it! From the bumbling idiot of a lead character to Snookums the Cat, this book had me ROFLing pretty much the entire time.
The Kili Wanna Affair is as kitschy as it's cover is colorful. The story comes fully equipt with grumpy aliens, one-eyed pirates, and intergalactic politics. The narrative is deliciously descriptive, and the dialogue is quick and witty, making the book a pretty quick read. The characters are interesting, well-developed, and absurd, just the way they should be. Kudos to author Scott A. Combs!
From a self-publishing perspective, Lisa thought Scott's book was one of the best Indie books she has read in regards to editing. In addition, she liked the interior layout and mentioned that she thinks Scott uses the writing software, Scrivener. We had a brief discussion about the software. Lisa uses it when she's drafting. I've tried it out, but I stick with Word because I write linearly. Lisa's only critique of the novel was that the cover was somewhat busy. I mentioned that it reminded me of the show, Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives on The Food Network.
Time for the Tip of the Week!
If you are writing a series or have more than one book, offer the first chapter of the second book at the end of your first book! This can entice your readers to move on to the next book. Even if you aren't writing a series, you can still place the first chapter from one of your books at the back of another book. Simply advertise it as 'More from Incredible Author...' Lisa mentioned that this tip would be placed on her to-do list.
On our next podcast, we will be talking about cover design and Lisa will have a Tip of the Week. So, remember, we’re an indie author community, be kind and review your fellow indie authors’ books!
And…
Indie Chicks out.
